I woke early, excited to get started. It was so dark and didn’t seem to be getting any lighter. There was a good reason, it was pouring and lightening (and probably thunder, but the hotel was really soundproofed). I was dreading having to drive in that. As you can see, God was so good to us – the rain stopped and the sun shone!

And here we are at the Start of Road. This was after an hour or so drive from the airport, and the navigation took us south to go north, but yes, we are at the start of Historic Route 66!
All of today’s photos are iphone snaps because…well keep reading 🙂
Coming out of the city, I found one of the many Muffler Men along the route

He was a little surprise on the way in, that I was able to capture better on the way out! The wall mural was an added bonus.
Once on our way, we went headed southwest to Romeoville, Joliet, Wilmington, Dwight, Odell, Pontiac before hitting Bloomington for the night. In Joliet we wanted to hit the old jail where the Blues Brothers was filmed, but it there were parades celebrating Mexican Independence Day. The road getting there was closed. The next stop was Wilmington to see the Gemini Giant in its new home.

I have better pictures of the Gemini Giant, but every trip needs some type of issue. My computer wouldn’t read my memory card!
Another landmark outside of Pontiac is the Meramec Caverns Barn. Full disclosure, we missed this and had to turn around to find it.

We continued on to Pontiac and I took some photos of the murals, but those are on the memory card that the computer won’t read, so maybe tomorrow I’ll be able to rescue those photos.
After that, we cried uncle and took the highway to Bloomington – it was a long day that started with a trek to even pick up the rental car. Tomorrow we’ll end in St. Louis for 2 days.
