Epic Vacation – Route 66 (the original) Edition

Once Upon a Time, we had no plans for a fall vacation. The camp MAG always rented was sold, the random camp we rented the next year wasn’t the same, so we decided to try something new – and the idea of Route 66 was born.

I started planning our trip in August 2021, for a September 2022 departure….February 2022 saw the start of the war in the Ukraine and an increase of gas prices. With that uncertainty, we decided to postpone our trip for at least a year. 2023 was a go! September 8 we boarded our flight to LAX

Arriving in LAX, we found our way to out rental car and started our way to Santa Monica to start our drive back to Philadelphia via the Mother Road

Once we officially started at the end of the line, it was time to make it to San Bernardino. And it took forever, but we went through Beverly Hills, among other places.

We spent our first night in The WigWam. And it was too cute!

Day 2

Day 2 Took us from San Bernardino to Needles. It was such a cool drive through the desert! There was so much to see and so much I didn’t know, such as there was/is a volcano in the desert of California.

Day 3

From Needles we went to Williams AZ. Along the way we went through Oatman and played with the wild burros. We had lunch at the Roadkill Cafe, stopped in Kingman AZ and saw so many abandoned places.

Day 4

Hanging out in Williams and going to the Grand Canyon

Day 5

From Williams to Moriarty NM. And yes, I had to stand on the corner in Winslow AZ. We drove through Flagstaff.

Day 6

Moriarty to Tucumarcari – a ride through the Painted Desert

Day 7

The Blue Swallow was the cutest motel in the world! Tucamacari was pretty interesting, both built and abandoned at the same time.

Day 8

Midway!!
